Another very nice video clip, Matt.
As an infielder, have you spent lots of time doing short-hop drills with a partner? That sort of thing seems to be helping my son a lot…1B is his favorite secondary position (after pitcher) but he was having a lot of trouble with bad throws to 1st until he started getting serious about taking lots of short-hop practice with his friends. One good thing about short-hop practice, you can do it almost anywhere.

Short hops were never a problem to me, but that “in-between” hop you were talking about gets to me once in a while. I hate misjudging a ground ball lol. Good video.

Thanks for the tips, I’m really good at fielding short hops and it’s something my coach compliments me on. But in between hops are a killer. Should we be charging the ball a little more to prevent those?

@laflippin Thank you! Yes in high school and college we would partner up and throw short hops to each other. Now I like to get on my knees and have someone fungo ground balls at me so I get all types of different hops. That’s great that his defense is improving. I think a lot of kids don’t spend a lot of time on their defense, and once they start focusing on it they see results very quickly.

@THISisKROD13 The biggest thing is to always keep your feet moving. Sometimes you will have to quickly take a step up to field a good hop and sometimes you will have to take a quick step back. Its important to stay light on your feet and be able to judge the hops and then quickly move up or back to pick your hop.

@JonFFavale Thanks! Yes the dreaded in between hop has eaten us all up at one time or another lol.

Hey, So how should we play long hops? I just got bit by one in my last game. should we “candy hop” it or just back up? I heard that we should try to smother the ball so at least it doesn’t fall. Great Vid, really like the fact that your saying fingers down!!

@DjSmash5 Thank you I’m glad it helped. Long hops are usually the easier ones. Anytime I can move my feet to play a long hop I try to. Usually i will have to take a quick step back to get a long hop, instead of a short hop where I will usually need to step up quickly. I field a long long by giving with the ball, using soft hands and funneling to the middle of my body. I hope this helps!
